A Disaster Medical Assistance Team or DMAT are professional and para-professional medical personnel that are organized to provide rapid-response emergency medical care or acident and casualty decontamination from a terrorist attack, natural disaster, or other accient incident in the United States. Disaster Medical Assistance Team's are an important part of the National Disaster Medical System and can operate under the Department of Health and Human Services or DHHS.
Created as a partnership with the United States Public Health Service and many communities in the USA, The DMATs were later absorbed into the Department of Homeland Security under FEMA and then returned to the Department of Health and Human Services.
There are about 55 DMATs all across the country that are formed by local volunteer groups of health care providers. Many support personnel receive funding from FEMA and other financial sources such as the states, counties, and private donors. The National Response Framework or NRF defines Disaster Medical Assistance Teams by their level of capability and experienceand when a level of training and expertise has been shown a higher priority level is given to the team. Along with standard DMATs there are some DMATs that specialize in certain specific medical conditions like dirty bombs, crush injuries, burns, and even mental health emergencies. Working along the same methodologies but with more time to accomplish their work is the sister teams DMORT or Disaster Mortuary Recovery Team.
